If you’re an ardent Ghanaian hiphop listener, you can’t possibly miss Kwesi Arthur and the inspiring phrase, Ground Up Chale. Ground Up Chale embodies the fact that nothing can be built without a foundation. But once the ground is established, and the walls are up, what happens to the top? What happens to the roof? When do you, for lack of a better term, roof down?
This analogy had me thinking about the roofing stage of buildings and the importance it plays in “completing” a home or office, beautifying said property and the neighborhood it’s in, and showing prestige among house owners and commercial spaces.
Which brings the big question, who are the top roofing companies in Accra and by extension, Ghana? Off the bat, I can think of six. Let’s call these my top 6 roofing companies in Accra. Before we get into that, a list of the top roofing companies to help you navigate this post. Below that, pointers to important things to note about roofing in Ghana.

Things to Consider When Choosing A Roofing Company
Price
Ultimately, getting any product or service boils down to price. Depending on your needs, the price of roofing sheets can either be expensive or just affordable. Great thing however is that, purchasing roofing solutions won’t cost you a fortune as they’re that affordable. You should aslo consider whether they offer installation services and at what cost.
Don’t Be A Cheapskate
While price is perhaps the biggest deciding factor when choosing a roofing company, you shouldn’t be a cheapskate. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. This is really common sense. Don’t compromise the safety, beauty and quality of your roofing solutions in the name of being a miser. If you can put up a building, you should be ready to invest in only the best. The companies listed here are just that.
After Sales Service
Take a critical look at the company you want to employ. Do they offer after sales and other value added services? These include how customer complaints are handled, technical advice, free estimates and so on.
Color Options
This might be trivial for most people, but for those who care enough about the color of their roof and how it complements their building and the surrounding, this an utmost necessity. Carefully consider what you want and choose a company that offers you the options you desire.
Track Record
It is an excellent idea to listen to what people say about some of these companies. You should especially regard the opinion of contractors since they work with these companies regularly. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by buying roofing sheets from a company with no solid track record and suffer the consequences like leaky roofs, damaged house structures and ultimately, waste of money. Luckily, many of the companies listed here have been around for more than two decades and have an impressive track record.
Temperature
Ghana is hot! You want a roofing solution that radiates as much heat as possible. Ideally, terracota, slate, clay and shingle roofs are best. But those tend to be more expensive and have more disadvantages. This post by Ghana House Plans explains it further.
Additionally, many of the roofing companies here don’t offer many options ouside of metal roofs and shingles in very few cases. Metal roofs luckily radiate heat, keeping your home relatively cool, are durable, easy to maintain, are fire resistant and more affordable.
Best Type of Roofing in Ghana

Based on the point about temperature, I will argue that the best type of roofing in Ghana are green or living roofs. These are simply regular roofs with plants growing on them. This eco-friendly roofing solution is achieved by installing a waterproof membrane over the roof and having plant life grow over it.
The advantages are enormous.
- It’s pretty and eco-friendly;
- Reduces heat loss and heat absorption, making it perfect for the rainy season, harmattan and the in-between confused weather of Accra;
- Reduces heat island effect, temperature increase due to the sun scorching asphalt and exposed urban surfaces like pavements and roofs; and
- Recycles oxygen in the environment.
The major downside to this however is maintenance. Improper installation and maintenance can damage the structure of your house and ruin your plants. It’s best to get professionals to do this for you.
Frances Buckle-Thompsons’ roof garden is reported to be the country’ first example of a green rooftop. This garden is perched atop the World Bank Ghana office on the sixth floor. It’s weird that this is the first considering the extremities of our weather. One can only hope that in time, green roofs see increased adoption in order to decrease the nation’s carbon footprint and beautify the city.
…the roof nullifies the heat island effect of the building… absorbing sunlight and cooling (it). It’s also providing insulation for the roof at the same time…

Prices of Roofing Sheets in Ghana
How much is a roofing sheet in Ghana? It depends. The roofing companies work on a case-by-case basis and instead offer quotes to clients dependent on their needs.
It’s probably easier to get the cost of galvanized roofing sheets from the market. In 2012, the cost of 20 pieces of galvanized roofing sheets was selling at GH¢140. The same quantity of aluminium sheets however was between GH¢350 and GH¢400.
20 pieces of galvanized roofing sheets are now going for GH¢140 instead of GH¢130 previously while the same quantity of aluminum roofing sheets is now selling between GH¢350 and GH¢400 instead of GH¢320 a week ago.
“Mortgage” Options for Buying Roofing Sheets
Some roofing companies have partnered with lending institutions and to provide a bespoke, Roof Now, Pay Later financing scheme.
